Europe's closest World Cup venue

The Grand Stade de Tanger occupies a unique position among Morocco's six World Cup venues: it is the closest Moroccan city to Europe, separated from Spain by just 14 kilometres of water at the Strait of Gibraltar. For the millions of football fans crossing from Spain and Portugal — the other two co-hosts — Tangier will be many fans' first Moroccan city and the most natural crossing point between the European and African legs of the tournament.

The stadium itself was substantially transformed in 2024–2025. Originally known as the Ibn Batouta Stadium (capacity 44,500), it underwent a comprehensive renovation that increased capacity to 75,500 — a 70% increase. The transformation included removing the athletics track, lowering the pitch level, and adding an entirely new lower tier of seating close to the field. The renovated ground reopened on 14 November 2025 as the "new" Grand Stade de Tanger, and hosted the final stages of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Getting to the stadium

From Spain and Europe — by ferry: This is the route many European fans will take. Two main crossings:

  • Algeciras → Tanger Med: The busiest crossing (~35 min), arriving at Tanger Med port, 40km east of the city. Coach transfers connect Tanger Med to Tangier city centre.
  • Tarifa → Tanger-Ville: Arrives directly at the Tangier passenger port in the city (35 min crossing). Most convenient for fans going straight to the city or stadium. Check current operators before travel as schedules vary by season.

By Al Boraq high-speed train from Casablanca: Morocco's TGV-style rail line connects Casablanca and Tangier via Rabat in 2 hours 10 minutes. First class only. Trains run multiple times daily. Tangier-Ville station is in the city centre, close to the medina — from here, a taxi to the stadium takes 10–15 minutes.

From Ibn Battuta Airport (TNG): Tangier's international airport is 15km from the city centre. Petit taxis to the city (metered) or grand taxis to the stadium are available. Some European low-cost carriers serve Tangier directly — check Ryanair, easyJet, and Vueling routes.

Climate on match days (June–July 2030)

Tangier has a Mediterranean climate influenced by both the Atlantic and the Strait. June temperatures average 22–26°C; July reaches 24–28°C. Sea breezes keep the city noticeably cooler than inland Morocco in summer — it is one of the more comfortable Moroccan venues for mid-summer football. Evening games will be pleasant.

ℹ️

Already ready — the furthest ahead of any Moroccan venue

Unlike Casablanca (still under construction) or Marrakech and Fes (still being renovated), the Grand Stade de Tanger is already at its 2030 configuration following the 2025 renovation. It is the most complete of Morocco's six World Cup venues. Match schedules and ticketing will be confirmed by FIFA closer to the tournament.

Explore Tangier beyond match day

Tangier has reinvented itself in the last decade. The medina is compact, navigable, and genuinely Moroccan — the Kasbah, the American Legation (the US's first overseas diplomatic property, now a museum), and the Grand Socco square are all within walking distance. Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules are 15km west — the point where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean and, in legend, where Hercules rested. The city has excellent seafood, a lively café culture, and a history layered with writers, artists, and spies from its days as an international zone.
