From the snow-capped Atlas peaks to the Sahara dunes, the Atlantic surf coast to the cedar forests of the Rif — in-depth guides to exploring Morocco beyond the cities.
Beyond the medinas, Morocco's landscapes are the reason many people come — and they change dramatically over short distances. The High Atlas rises to 4,167 m at Toubkal, threaded with Berber villages and trekking trails within easy reach of Marrakech. South and east, the Sahara begins: the great dune fields of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, reached by camel and slept under the stars. The Atlantic coast runs for some 2,500 km of surf beaches and fortified ports, while the green, misty Rif mountains in the north shelter Chefchaouen and the Akchour waterfalls.
