Marrakech · 45,860 capacity after renovation · Under major renovation 2026–2030
The Grand Stade de Marrakech is one of Morocco's most architecturally distinctive stadiums. Designed by Italian firm Gregotti Associati International, its terracotta-tinted curved facade blends with the surrounding landscape in a way that reflects the city's own warm, earthy palette. The stadium has long been the venue for major domestic matches and AFC Champions League games, and it hosted Morocco's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations group stage fixtures.
To meet FIFA 2030 requirements, the stadium closed in early 2026 for major structural renovation. The key changes are the removal of the athletics track, which allows the stands to be brought significantly closer to the pitch, and the lowering of the playing surface by 10 metres — an engineering operation that increases the lower tier's capacity and dramatically improves sightlines. The final capacity after renovation will be 45,860 seats. Crucially, the Gregotti design language — the curved terracotta form — is being preserved.
From Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK): The airport is just 5km from the city centre — one of the most convenient airport-to-city transfers among all Moroccan host cities. Petit taxis from the airport to central Marrakech cost 70–100 MAD fixed; the stadium is a similar distance from the city centre toward the Route de Safi. Journey time is typically 10–15 minutes outside of match-day congestion.
From the medina: The stadium is approximately 3–4km from Jemaa el-Fna — a short petit taxi ride (20–30 MAD). On match days, traffic around the stadium and medina will be congested; allow extra time or walk part of the route.
By train: Marrakech train station (Gare de Marrakech) has regular ONCF services from Casablanca (~3h, 90–130 MAD). From the station, take a petit taxi to the stadium (~5 min).
Marrakech is significantly hotter than Morocco's coastal cities in summer. June temperatures reach 35–40°C in the afternoon; July is hotter still. Evening kick-offs will be essential — and even then, 8pm temperatures can be 30°C+. The stadium renovation includes improved shading, but fans should plan for the heat: bring water, wear light clothing, and if possible, plan your day to avoid peak afternoon sun. The post-game medina experience at night is when Marrakech is at its best.
The Grand Stade de Marrakech closed in early 2026 for World Cup renovation. It is expected to reopen before the 2030 tournament. Match schedules and ticketing will be confirmed closer to the event. Local club Kawkab de Marrakech is playing home matches at El Harti Stadium during the closure.
Marrakech is Morocco's most visited city — and for good reason. Jemaa el-Fna square transforms from a daytime market to an evening food and entertainment carnival. The souks of the medina sell leather, spices, ceramics, and textiles. Riads — courtyard guesthouses inside the old city — range from affordable to world-class. The Majorelle Garden and the Atlas Mountains gateway (Imlil, 1.5h by taxi) round out a trip that is unlike anywhere else on earth.
